First time camping gear list.
This list assumes you are car camping, that means driving to the campsite, and back packs are not needed.
Tent: Borrow a tent from the troop or buy something small and cheap from Walmart. A three person tent fits two people.
Sleeping bag: Up till October you can use an inexpensive sleeping bag from Walmart. Bring a blanket to add if the forecast is colder. You will need a small pillow and a sleeping pad, see below.
Sleeping pad: an inflatable sleeping pad cushions you from the ground as well as insulating you from the cold ground. Only blow it up about half way, not rock hard.
Mess kit: we don’t use disposable plates and cutlery, instead each scout brings a mess kit and washes it. A sturdy plastic tupperware container, or a wide bowl is good. Bring heavy plastic cutlery that wont break. You will need a cup, plastic is good.
Clothes: for a weekend you don’t need a lot of clothes but plan to have enough so you have dry clothes if you get soaked. You also need dry clothes for sleeping, these need to be fresh, not worn during the day. The dampness in clothes you wear during the day will make you cold at night. Dry socks for night help keep your feet warm. A knit hat helps keep you warm at night.
Toiletries: you will need tooth paste and a brush, deodorant, was cloth, comb, etc.
Rain gear: rain happens and we go camping anyway. The troop has canopies and awnings to set up to create a dry area. You will need a good rain jacket and rain pants.
Boots: bring comfortable boots and maybe spare shoes you leave in the car.
Personal items: take pictures with a phone or camera, playing cards, paperback book, pocket knife, camp chair, small flaslight, etc.
