Why You May Want To Join Troop 1785

Boy Scouting is a year-round program for boys around ages 11 - 17. Through the Boy Scout program, young men can achieve the core objectives of strengthening character, personal fitness and good citizenship. Part of the program concentrates on developing leadership skills. Scouts are taught those skills at training sessions and through example, and then giving the boys opportunities, whether it be on a community service project or making arrangements for the next camping trip, to practice and hone those leadership skills. Troop 1785 is a troop that emphasizes the concept, "The troop is run by the scouts." Sure, there is adult supervision, guidance and counseling, but in our troop the scouts decide when and where to go camping, what programs will be run and what the meetings and training programs consist of.

Our troop goes camping every month of the year. We alternate between a week long council summer camp on odd years, and a two week long troop planned high adventure trip on even years. Within the past few years a Troop 1785 Scout has had the opportunity to go white water canoing, rafting, mountain biking, snow skiing, swimming, visit historic sites (such as Gettysburg, Antietam, Monticello, The Smithsonian) go rappelling, spelunking (caving), learn to build a fire with only flint and steel, go shooting (rifle & shotgun), bake a cake in a dutch oven, obtain a ham radio license, go horseback riding, go water skiing, build a trebuchet and compete nationally at Pumpkin Chunkin, sail and snorkel the Florida Keys, go backpacking and camping.

So if camping, hiking, swimming, canoing and generally having fun while learning leadership skills sounds like the things you'd like to do, then Troop 1785 is the place to be.
